So I know this is a little far fetched, and I'm not gonna type a lot because I don't know how many people are even on these forums anymore, but this is really my last geek haven.

So here's the question:

How hard would it be to wire a computer into a car, with internet access, and about 8 webcams? Would the cost for data be total outrageous for a constant stream, even if possible?

The idea is that I'm going to travel the U.S. with a live feed broadcasting whenever and where ever I'm driving (or at least in the car).

I know it sounds crazy, but hell, I'm about to graduate with zero student loans and a lot of free time.

Any help AT ALL is cool.

Like all truly fun geek things: because. (alternatively, 42).

There's lots of refs out on the internet to car PCs -- some links already in here. Plan a one time cost of $1K. If possible, think fanless mini ITX with an SSD. The challenge will mostly be with dealing with the hot summer sun when the engine is not running... possibly keeping it powered and running when the car is off as well without killing the battery.

USB webcams are an option. So are 802.11 based webcams. Figure another one time cost of about $1K here, especially if you go the wireless route-- which would be good, because if you set it up right, the car becomes a mobile hotspot, and any tablets/other gadgets can also take advantage of a rolling internet feed.

The real kicker will be getting the data out of the car and into the proverbial cloud, as Franco suggested. Most providers have a 5GB cap, and you'll easily blow through that each day. Figure $50 a day for data service.

Depending on where you roam, the data coverage itself may be an issue as well. Check with your carrier(s) and make sure there's cell towers in all spots along the way... you could possibly even mix and match carriers based on where you plan to be and when.

Depending on how much lead time you've got before you start this expedition, you could probably try to partner up with one of the carriers and see if they'd be interested in sponsoring you. It would make for a hell of an ad campaign for Verizon (can you hear me now?) to showcase what their bright shiny new 4G networks can do. They get a free ad campaign. You get your data issue covered. You just need to make it interesting enough for them to put together ads wrapped around what it is you're doing.

you cannot do gopro cameras as a webcam. they dont do live feed to a laptop. especially if they are in the waterproof box. they can be charged and recording at the same time though.

not sure for cameras, but you could get a verizon 4g hotspot card, hook up the laptop in the passanger spot and did live recording from Twitch.TV or something like that.

A mini-ITX box with a couple of 1TB drives to store HD data, Linux of Windows and you are talking under $500 for the PC. $50-$100 for the cameras. So about $1K, right? There are PSU's for computers that run on DC, aka in your car (http://www.powerstream.com/DC-PC-12V.htm for example). Then mount that mini PC in the trunk and use USB extender cables as long as you do not go over 5M With 6 USB ports you could run multiple cameras at once. Now, streaming this video? You are talking major coin, if only for the 3G tethering, and there is no way that you are going to do anything more than 480p on 3G. But taking the vid and uploading it later from a land line? I see that as doable. Once you have the video you take it home, edit and produce what you want, take out the boring etc and then you are set.

Why 8 cameras? you really only need five good cameras: Front Rear each side and cabin.

Well I cant see why you would need 8 webcam's..

What I would recommend is checking out the GoPro cammera's they come in a sealed case, with all sorts of mounts..

I wanted to get one for when I take my 4x4 truck wheeling, but I don't have the truck anymore..

You can find footage on youtube, just search for gopro

Well I've seen it done - the company who did StormChasers did a good job - but they had massive decks for video and not even 8 cameras.

Immediately I'd figure you'd need a decent amount of drive space to the computer won't be small, it will likely need a power inverter and/or another battery.

I'd say it would be costly but to some $10,000 isn't costly
