Event Info
Do I bring my own computer?
Yes. You will need to bring your entire computer... keyboard, mouse, monitor, joystick, mouse pad, all cables, and outlet strip.

Do spectators need to pay?
Spectators are welcome to attend the event for free. You do not need to pre-register or pay. When you arrive at the event, you will need to fill out the spectator form at the Front Desk to obtain a spectator id. Spectators are subject to the same rules and guidelines as paid attendees. Please note that spectators are not allowed to stay the duration of the event or participate in any of the activities. This also includes the facilities/equipment that we have/provide there. You are also not allowed to stay through the evening. Please let us know if you have any questions on this.

How large is this event?
While we have had events with over 550 gamers in this hall before, we are limiting the size of this event.

How Much Does the Event Cost?
$30 for the event starting Saturday at 11am running through Sunday at 4pm

What are the top mistakes attendees make?
Don't forget to bring your stuff. Review the check list twice. People ALWAYS FORGET mouse pads, patch cables, outlet strips or hardware drivers. Show up for the event and tournaments on time. Be sure to recheck the schedule one week before the convention.

Make sure your computer is working and that your ethernet card will get you on a network ahead of time.

If you are in a bad mood or like to complain, don't come. If you think the price is too much, don't come. Lastly, understand why we exist. The staff puts in hundreds of hours so fellow gamers can have fun, so take a moment to say "thanks".

How Much Does Parking Cost?
Parking is $3.00 in the student parking garage. Although you can park in any space on campus marked Red or Green over the weekend.

What about security? Will my PC be safe?
Everyone enters and exits through main doors into the hall. While we don't guanantee the security of any equipment, thousands of people have attended our events without a computer stolen.

What about Sleep?
You can either rent a hotel room, or pull up a sleeping bag in the hall. Be sure to bring something to keep you warm at night.

Will the facility be kept clean?
The facility sanitation staff will be on duty during the length of the event. Of course, the hall itself will be much cleaner if everyone picks up after themselves.

Miscellaneous
Can I sell stuff at the event?
Since we have vendors at the event, everyone wishing to sell product at the event must contact burden@lanwar.com first. We don't usually prohibit someone from trying to sell or barter for their old video card, but prior approval is required.

If you are a vendor and wish to participate at the event, please email burden@lanwar.com.

Helpdesk / Tech Support
When you have a technical question to help you stay up and running, look for the orange "Bike Flags". These flags signify a extremely knowledgable gamer who has volunteered to help people with their tech support problems. If they can't fix your troubles, go up to the main desk (next to the food).

Network
Can I bring an [insert network hardware here] to plug into the network?
No. Please do not bring hubs, switches, routers, repeaters, gender changers, or token rings to plug into the network. All ports for plugging your single PC into the network are supplied at the table and no additional hardware other than an RJ45 Category 5/5e/6 cable and appropriate NIC card are necessary. If you have a server system that you would like to hook into the network, it should be placed in "server row." To arrange placement of your server system, please contact a staff member upon arriving to find the location which we would like your server.

Additionally, server row may have a "denser" switch, so be sure to bring an extra long cable in the event your server will be far from the network switch it plugs into. At least 50 feet should do it. Server ports as well as floor ports are switched 100 Megabit.

How long of an ethernet cable will I need?
Please bring the longest cable that you have, preferrably 25 feet or more. If the cable you bring is not long enough, hardware vendors will be available to sell you an inexpensive cable that will fit. Please save it for the next event!

How should I set my PC up so that I can be online and gaming quickest?
The network uses DHCP to distribute IP address information to participants. You should configure your computer's TCP/IP settings to "Obtain automatically from the network" (Windows) or "Use DHCP" (Mac OS X)

If you are still unsure what setting to use, don't worry, you can ask a knowledgable staff member when you arrive and they will be more than glad to help you or point you in the right direction.

Update: Another place to look for tech support is to look for the orange "Bike Flags". These flags signify a extremely knowledgable gamer who has volunteered to help people with their tech support problems.

What if I don't have an ethernet card or patch cable?
We will have local hardware vendors at the event. They will have ethernet cards, patch cables and other hardware and software for sell cheap. It would be MUCH prefered if you already have your ethernet card installed successfully. If not, we can help you, but still takes time away from the gaming.

What type/speed network port will I have?
The network will have a fully switched Gigabit backbone and each client will have a dedicated switched 100 Megabit ethernet port. We average pings very low pings.

Will I have access to an Internet connection?

Yes, Yes, Yes!  We have a 20mb connection to the Internet 2 Backbone.  For those who don't know, that's a big pipe.

Servers
Can I bring a server?
Yes, you can bring any type of game or file server you want but you must follow all of the server rules. (see other faq)

How do I need to configure my server?

1) It needs to be configured for DHCP. If you have a special need for a static ip address, contact the network admin when you arrive.
2) It needs to have at least (1) 100mb ethernet card.
3) We prefer that you remote into the server from your seat. Its easier for you and for us. i.e. Terminal Server, PC Anywhere etc.
4) Run some soft of virus protection software on your server.
5) Download the latest security patches for your server and install them.

IRC Server (In the Room?)
Will there be an IRC server in the room? Yes, irc.lanwar.lan is always available at the event (in the room).

What are the rules for bringing a server?

1) The server must sit up on server row.
2) You must bring a 25 to 50ft cat5/cat5e cable. (There can be a lot of servers up on server row and the backbone switches are not guaranteed to be right next to your server)
3) Although not required anymore, but it might still be helpful to bring a 50-100ft extension cord, just in case. Keep in mind, that all power is run by the staff only.

What is Server Row and why?
Server row is where all servers are stashed... (duh). Seriously, we require all servers to be put up on server row for serveral reasons:
1) Power: We strickly manage the power consumption out on the main floor. If we allowed people to put extra computers out on the floor then it would be impossible to predict how much power is needed for each seat/row etc. This could cause power outages out on the main floor, upset gamers and the overall harmony of the event....
2) Network Connection: same as above but we need to ensure there is a free ethernet port for each gamer.
3) Backbone Connections: Server row has connections into the 100mb backbone, which limits cross switch traffic by putting you on the backbone.
4) Aesthetics: The servers look all pretty sitting together up front.

Other server row info:
1) You can get to your server at any time.
2) The best way to get to your server is to remote into it via Terminal Server, PC Anywhere etc.
3) Please turn your monitors off when your server is not in use (cuts down on power consumption)
